Today is the day whereby the Chinese celebrate the Winter Solstice Festival. I'm not quite sure what it's about but all I know is that there's Tong Yuin/Tang Yuin involved which is suppose to represent a "whole family" or "togetherness" according to my Momma. (: The rounder the TongYuin, the more whole the family.
The sisters and I decided to make some Tong Yuin though my mom bought some already just for the fun of it.Get in the spirit eh yo yo. :p So Momma got the glutinous rice dough from the market and palm and cane sugar for its filling.
Ingredients.Rolling the glutinous ball isn't easy. You have to roll it in your palms slowly and gently cause the dough breaks up very very easily. Then you stuff a little piece of sugar in it and roll gently again. You have to roll the ball a few times and right before you put it into the hot pandan water to ensure it's round and doesn't have holes in them.
The done balls. I even customized mine with heart shapes, smiley faces and what not just to make it more interesting.Haha.Wasn't easy since the dough breaks of so easily -.-
You'll need cold water by the side to dip the tong yuin when it's done to make sure it doesn't break up.
The glutinous balls are then boiled in water until they float which is a sure sign that they are cooked through.
Eaten with ginger water or with coconut milk water thingo too!Ah tasted so good when you bite through and the melted palm or cane sugar comes oozing out giving it a sweet and delightful taste.Yumms.
Had a big dinner at home to celebrate the festival. I mean,I don't really know what the festival means but hey, there's loads of food, good enough! (:
Lovee,
Angelinaa.
